Visiting Professor Program

The IFCN supports a Visiting Professor Program, for which all IFCN Societies can apply. Please note that the request should not be for a single lecture only; several lectures and/or a workshop are anticipated. The proposal should include what the visiting professor may do (e.g., specific topics of interest) and the expected number of participants. The potential number of participants will be important in judging these requests, and requests from countries where clinical neurophysiology is developing will have preference.

The NCS/EMG workshop, the first of its kind in the country, was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The workshop trainers included local experts from SCNB, Prof. Dr. Sk Mahbub Alam, Prof. Dr. Hasan Zahidur Rahman and Prof. Dr. Rajib Nayan Chowdhury as well as trainers from IFCN, Dr. Rajiv Wijesinghe (Australia) and Prof. Dr. Nortina Shahrizaila (Malaysia).

Malaysia

Professor Aatif Husain played a central role in delivering the Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IONM) Program as well as being part of the Scientific Program during the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences (MSN) Annual Meeting in July of 2019.

The IONM program started with a Basic Workshop which was held as part of the pre- Conference Workshop at the Grand Riverview Hotel, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. The Program included lectures on the basic concepts of evoked potentials, electromyography and electroencephalography monitoring in surgical interventions. This was followed by case discussions from Professor Husain and the local neurosurgeons. The Workshop was attended by 64 delegates from various backgrounds including neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and neurotechnologists.

The Advanced IONM Workshop was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at University Malaya Medical Centre which is the main tertiary Neurosciences Centre in Malaysia. The Workshop was attended by more than 50 delegates. Professor Husain delivered several lectures discussing the various methods of intraoperative monitoring during spinal cord and intracranial surgeries. The local neurosurgeons presented cases and the local experience with intraoperative monitoring.

Egypt

Prof. Dengler, member of the IFCN ExCo, was visiting this institution as it will become a clinical neurophysiology training center for English speaking young African Doctors supported by the IFCN Scholarship Program.

India

Profs. Reinhard Dengler, Gourie Devi, Manjari Tripathi, and Veerendra Kumar

Under IFCN’s visiting professor program, Prof. Reinhard Dengler, Treasurer IFCN, took part in the 2nd Annual Conference of the Clinical Neurophysiology subsection of Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN), held in the Department of Neurology of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in November 2015. He delivered a comprehensive lecture on ALS including modern electrophysiological approaches testing upper and lower motor neuron involvement and also took part in an EMG demonstration workshop. All the delegates appreciated the knowledge imparted. Active interaction between him and young neurologists of the country was the highlight of his visit. The feed back received at the end was gratifying and most of the 115 delegates looked forward for more teaching courses in Clinical Neurophysiology.

Mexico

As one of the activities of the Visiting Professor program, Dr. Renato Verdugo traveled to Mexico in November 2016, where a workshop on SFEMG was done. The activity was very well received by the 40 Mexican electromyographists that attended.

Libya

As one of the activities of the IFCN’s global outreach program, Prof., AyatAllah farouk Hussein , IFCN global outreach coordinator ( North Africa and Middle East) delivered a comprehensive workshop including EMG and NCV demonstration in English and Arabic languages .

The workshop was held Libya 27-28th May 2025, Tripoli central hospital. Two days dedicated to EMG&NCV technical basics, hands- on and Case discussion .The activity was very well received in spite of the circumstances there.

The workshop included lectures on the basic concepts of electromyography and nerve conduction studies .This was followed by hands- on training . The Workshop was attended by trainees from various backgrounds including neurologists ,neurophysiologists and neuro-pediatrics.

Active interaction between her and the trainee of the country was the highlight of her visit. The feedback received at the end was amazing and all of the trainees looked forward for more teaching courses in Clinical Neurophysiology and more engagement to the IFCN .

IFCN’s global outreach program is chaired by Prof. Nortina Shahrizalia

The other trainers included Dr. Mohamed E. Eltwayeb Clinical Neurophysiologist, Dr. Mabrouka Alqreeri Neurology specialist, Dr. Eman Abdelkarim Neurology specialist.

Visiting Professor Program Application

Broadening the Research and Knowledge Exchange of Clinical Neurophysiology

One benefit of IFCN membership is the opportunity to apply for the Visiting Professor Program, which is open to all IFCN Societies and ICNS members. The goal of the Program is to widen clinical and scientific knowledge. To that end, the IFCN Executive Committee (ExCo) is looking to support Visiting Professors who would participate by conducting lectures, workshops, or other practical activities, including organized meetings with trainees. Single lectures would not be sufficient. The visit should last long enough to accomplish the objectives without exceeding four (4) days.

Proposals should include specific topics of interest, the expected number of participants warranting this effort, any useful information considered relevant, the society hosting the meeting, and details of why this expertise is not available locally. Requests from countries where clinical neurophysiology is developing will have preference. In case of a request for a topic without naming a specific person, the ExCo will assign a Visiting Professor. When a request for a specific Visiting Professor is proposed, the ExCo will evaluate the request and may suggest alternative persons instead. The ExCo wishes to keep visiting professors geographically close to the society making the request, both to encourage local collaboration and to minimize travel expenses.

Funding by IFCN should be recognized on the host organization’s web site and in on-site program materials.
